‘Banned from Vegas’ Peek into the Past…

Afternoon,
Can’t say it’s a good one. I feel like I’ve been beat up. Sometimes I think I’m too old for this STUFF (you know what I want to say). Yesterday was the GA Literary Festival and I’m glad I went, sold some books, met some people, but the 1st half of the day we were outside in front of the library. It was in the fifties with a mean wind and I had the last table on the corner which caught a cross breeze. Thank God, I keep a pair of gloves in my winter jacket pocket.
When hubby and I came back from lunch, they had moved us all indoors. The crowd was light due to the weather, yet it was a positive experience, since I not only sold books, I donated to the library and I’m joining the Georgia Writers Assoc.

Before I went to bed last night, I took some Nyquil, but I still woke up with a scratchy throat, so I’m gonna take it easy and stay warm.

In the meantime, for all of you who haven’t read Ace of Hearts, (why not?) I’m posting a short excerpt. Come on, try it, you may like it!

Exclusive Excerpt from Ace of Hearts

When Shevaughn and Jared arrived, they found the apartment door open with a uniformed police officer stationed there and a host of other personnel scattered within. Shevaughn showed the uniformed officers her badge, and then stepping over things, slowly surveyed the apartment. At first sight, it looked like a case of vandalism, but then one officer led Shevaughn to the body and she faced a scene right out of some horror movie.

Good Lord!

Suddenly, the room seemed so hot she broke out in a sweat. She felt queasy and a small burp threatened to bring up her lunch. She swallowed hard and tried to keep all that sesame beef down, but a lump was stuck in her throat. It prevented her from completing this natural function and threatened to choke her. Help me through this, she silently prayed. Help me pull this off. It wouldn’t do to look weak in front of her fellow officers. She had to prove to them and herself that she could handle this. She hid a shiver and got closer to the body.

“Detective…”

One of the uniformed officers approached Shevaughn.

“We have the apartment manager and a lady who says she’s a friend of the victim in the apartment across the hall. The manager is the one who called it in.”

“Yes, I’d like to speak with them. Make sure the crime scene is secure and no reporters.”

“Shevaughn, if you want, I can talk to the apartment manager,” Jared volunteered.

“Fine, I’ll take the friend. Thanks, Jared.”

“No problem, you alright?”

“Yeah,” she lied.

Shevaughn couldn’t help feeling watched. It was as if they had her under a microscope. She had to snap out of it and get back to the business at hand. She had a job to do and do it she will. She walked to the manager’s apartment down the hall, thankful to be away from the horror she’d just witnessed.

“Hi,” she said, extending her hand to the crumbled woman on the sofa.

Shevaughn sat down on the couch beside her.

“I’m Detective Robinson. Can you tell me anything about what happened to your friend?”

“No, no, she’d said something about a big date last night. Like this could be the start…”

Joi broke off and burst into tears.

Shevaughn reached for her and Joi collapsed into her shoulder, sobbing.

“She always thought she was running’ things, you know. She thought she could handle anything, especially men and now look, look what’s happened to her. My God, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe someone would do something like that, especially not to her.”

“You have no idea who this man was?”

“No, she said she’d tell me everything today after work. She liked teasing me by keeping me in suspense.”

“Well, if you remember anything, anything at all, even if it doesn’t seem important to you, I want you to call me,” Shevaughn instructed and started to hand Joi a business card, but remembered they had her old extension on them. She hadn’t gotten her new ones yet. She crossed it out and wrote her new number on the back.

Joi took the card without looking at it.

Shevaughn left and returned to the murder scene.

Jared was looking around the apartment, taking notes on its general appearance and then began to concentrate on the victim and her lewd body position. He wrote down the victim’s general description. Looking closely, he saw the marks on her throat.

I’d appreciate it if you post a comment and let me know what you think. One will be picked for the daily giveaway.

‘Banned from Vegas’ goes to the GA Literary Festival

I’ll tell you all about the festival tomorrow.

Join me and the men in my life @ ‘Banned from Vegas’ next stop with author Brooklen Borne

Happy Friday!

I’m getting ready for the GA Literary Festival in Rome, GA, but wanted to ask you to stop by author Brooklen Borne as I talk a little about the men in my life. No, not hubby, I’d be here all day, remember we’ve been together for 38 years! I’m talking about the villians in Ace of Hearts and Black Jack.

I LOVE bad men (only on paper, believe me) and these two are the epitome of bad. Each has his own reason for doing the things he does and I give you a glimpse of why they’re rotten to the core. Yet when they love, they love hard….too hard.

Don’t forget to stop by and leave a comment to be eligible for the daily giveaway. I’ll pop in, in case there are any questions.

As I end this week, I want to take a moment and acknowledge Nia Promotions for their invaluable help on this wonderful virtual tour. And I’d like to thank all the authors for having me.

Have a blessed weekend,
Jean

‘Banned from Vegas’ stops by author, Adrienna Turner to talk about ‘Silent Revenge’.

Mornin’,

Today is another gray day, but I’m with author Adrienna Turner. We met on Blog Talk Radio and she attended my Quad A event in May, but we’ve been IMing each other for over a year.

Stop by and learn about Terri, one of my antagonistic characters. Even though she has major issues, sometimes you can’t help but feel empathy for her and her situation.

Please check out the link, leave a comment and have a chance @ the daily giveaway.

I’m contemplating going back to bed, but after 2 cups of coffee it’s too early for a nap, so I’ll be popping in to answer any questions you may have.

Peace,
Jean

Check out Separated @ Birth, the next ‘Banned from Vegas’ stop with author Terra Little

Hey,
It’s another rainy day in GA. I’ve been here over 10 years and I’ve never seen this much rain in a month. So grab your favorite morning drink, stay inside and join me with author Terra Little.
Today, I’ve gone a little off the beaten path. I want to tell you about my ’separated @ birth’ theory. Two authors I love are Stephen King and James Patterson. I think I may have an explanation why, though I doubt they would agree.
Don’t forget to leave a comment and have a chance @ the daily giveaway.
Staying dry,
Jean

‘Banned from Vegas” – Introducing my heroine, Shevaughn Robinson

It’s a beautiful moning in Georgia after another night of rain,
Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite characters and the backbone of the Deck of Cardz series, Detective Shevaughn Robinson. I got her name from the old soap, “Ryan’s Hope”. Its origin is Irish – Siobhan. I just spelled it like it was pronounced.
When I was pregnant with my last child, I called him Shevaughn the whole 9 months and then gave birth to a son! Hubby named him ‘Spencer’. Since I had 6 kids (5 sons & a daughter), I knew ’shop was closed’ ;o) so I gave my character the name.
I’m pleased to introduce you to my heroine.
Peace,
Jean

Next ‘Banned from Vegas’ stop – Meet Jean Holloway in Interview with author CM Jones

Good afternoon,
First, I want to thank everyone for the birthday greetings. I’m such a lightweight now, it takes me 2 days to recover from 2 drinks, but then my sister, Lori, makes a mean concoction.
Today, I’m stopping by author CM Jones.

Leave a comment & have a chance @ the daily giveaway.
Think I’ll go take a nice, hot bubble bath, but I promise to stop in later.

‘Banned from Vegas’ Sunday Snippet

Black Jack…Wanna Play?
Taking it easy today, all the food (& drinks ;o) have me in slo mo. Please take a moment & check out this exclusive Black Jack excerpt:

Allen tried calling his sister several times, however after not hearing from her by the next day, he decided to take a long lunch, stop by and check on her. Maybe he’d ask her out to lunch. He figured he could use it as an excuse plus he thought maybe she would enjoy getting out of the house for a spell. Right then he promised himself he would be a better brother and make an effort to see her more often.

He pulled up into her driveway and saw several plastic-bagged bundles of rolled up newspapers, lying randomly on the lawn. They were wet from last night’s short rainfall. That indicated something wasn’t right. Helene read the paper with her Sanka every morning. She would never have left so many outside to clutter up her landscaping. Allen knew if she had planned to go somewhere, she usually made arrangements to stop delivery.

His hand trembled, just a little, as he got the key from under the imitation rock in the terra cotta planter under the doorbell. The tremor got worse as he tried to place the key in the hole. He heard Helene chuckle, “Put some hair around it,” and the sound of her laughter reminded him of how much he loved her off-the cuff evocative comments. He couldn’t remember the last time he told her he loved her. Sometimes, one should take the time to let people know just how important they truly are.

“Helene?”

His voice came out as a raspy whisper.

“Hey, where are you?” He spoke a little louder this time.

It felt so cold. Allen went directly to the thermostat, turned it up to seventy degrees and proceeded to walk past the living room, down the hall toward her bedroom.

The bed looked like someone had just gotten out of it, rumpled sheets pulled down, pillows scattered. Not at all like Helene, in her world, everything had its place. That condition worsened after Frank died.

When he got to her bathroom, the closed floral shower curtain seemed ominous. She never kept the curtain closed. He remembered she told him it had something to do with reading “The Shining”, even though she told her lady friends she thought people who kept the curtain drawn were probably hiding a dirty tub. She always kept her shower curtain open.

He pulled it back and although he’d prepared himself for the worst, it turned out more horrible than he could have imagined.
