‘Banned from Vegas’ Tour stops with my good friend, author Diane Dorcé for Readers Sound Off

Well, it’s Monday and although it’s not my favorite day of the week, I’m happy because I have the pleasure of being with my literary sister, Diane Dorcé. In case you don’t know, Diane is my 1st publisher, the one who had faith in me and helped me accomplish my dream after 27 years. We have a bond stronger than author and publisher, we’re family.

Please take a moment and see what fans are saying about Ace of Hearts and Black Jack. Leave a comment and have a chance at the daily giveaway.

‘Banned from Vegas’ Exclusive Excerpt from Deuces Wild.

Good Mornin’,

I have to start out with thanking Tamara Grant for the 2nd Annual Books & Brunch @ Mary Mac’s yesterday. The food was good and the crowd was GREAT! I love an intimate setting where authors & readers get to mix & mingle. The fact that I sold some books, well, that was definitely a plus. Now as promised, here’s an excerpt from my third novel.
Exclusive Excerpt from Deuces Wild
Detective Shevaughn Williams walked the perimeter of the crime scene among the half dozen fellow officers behind Eddie’s Lounge, a neighborhood club whose clientele mainly consisted of the twenty-one to thirty year old crowd.
“Who called this in?”
A patrolman pointed her to a short, stocky man leaning against the red brick wall across the alley from the dumpster. Still quite muscular, he looked like he may have been a boxer in his younger days, but now his gray hair and slight paunch were evidence that it had been a long time since he’d been in the ring. Right now, he looked as if he could be knocked out by a breeze. She went to the visibly shaken man.
“Sir, what’s your name?
“Bob, Bob Hill.”
“Mr. Hill, would you mind if I ask you a few questions?”
“I already told the other cop,” he informed her.
She could tell he was making an effort to control his emotions.
“But if you think it will help…I was sweeping down the alley, cleaning up all the cigarette butts dumped back here from last night before getting ready to open the club. I always like to start the day with a clean slate.”
He realized he was getting side-tracked and went on with his story.
“I see this sneaker by the dumpster, right? At first, I’m thinkin’ someone tossed it and missed the bin, so I walk over to get rid of it myself. I get closer and notice something’s funny, like it doesn’t look right ‘cause it’s not lying flat on the asphalt, you know, it’s…at an angle. That’s when I got the chills, but I still went in for a closer look. I see a leg, realize it’s a body and couldn’t stop myself from looking further up to the face, well…at least where the face supposed to be, but there’s this flat, bloody, grocery bag with pieces of the skull sticking out. I lost my breakfast. Someone beat the shit out of whoever that was, if you’ll pardon my French, ma’am. I got myself together and dialed ‘911’. And here we are.”
Shevaughn thanked him and went to take a look for herself. As she walked toward the bin, she prayed she wouldn’t be able to imagine the condition of the victim’s face. She didn’t know if she could handle it.
Considering the obvious destruction, the victim’s clothes were unusually clean. They dressed him when they were done. It looked like, after encasing the victim’s head in a Pathmark bag, someone had taken to it with a fast ax. Mr. Hill was right. The skull was beaten so badly it appeared to be only a couple of inches wide. She saw the bone shards sticking up through the blood-stained plastic bag and she felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise up, individually. She got the ominous impression that she was in the proximity of pure evil. Shevaughn had just enough time to turn away and walk a few steps before she tasted the vomit that collected at the back of her throat. When she tried to swallow, her stomach propelled her breakfast. Although it was a cool October morning, she broke out in a sweat. It took every ounce of fortitude not to pass out.

I haven’t been this much of a tease since high school! LOL

‘Banned from Vegas’ stops by author TL James and reveals ‘New Cover, Same Thrills’

Hi,
Today I’m stopping by my good friend and literary diva, author TL James to introduce you to the new and improved version of Ace of Hearts. When my new publisher, PHE Ink asked if I wanted to revise and re-release Ace, I jumped at the opportunity. Readers had some questions that I wanted to address. PHE Ink allowed me to add back 60 pages, revise, re-edit and I’m VERY pleased.

The new cover has a Hitchcock feel to it and I love it! Thank you, Dana Pittman of Nia Promotions for the new design.

Leave a comment, tell me what you think and be eligible for the daily giveaway.

Happy Friday,
Jean

‘Banned from Vegas’ stops @ author, Brooklyn Darkchild with ‘No excuses…Just Do It!’

Mornin’,

Today, I’m feeling right at home with author Brooklyn Darkchild. We met through GoodReads.com and our online communications have grown into a mutual love and respect. In fact, I’ll see her again on Saturday @ the 2nd Annual Book & Brunch 2009 in Atlanta. I can’t wait!
I thought that since there are a lot of aspiring authors out there, I’d share some writing, marketing and promotion advise. You can also catch her at her MySpace Blog.

I hope it motivates someone to go to the computer and start that story that’s just itching to get out.

Just Do It,
Jean

‘Banned from Vegas’ Peek into the Past…

Afternoon,
Can’t say it’s a good one. I feel like I’ve been beat up. Sometimes I think I’m too old for this STUFF (you know what I want to say). Yesterday was the GA Literary Festival and I’m glad I went, sold some books, met some people, but the 1st half of the day we were outside in front of the library. It was in the fifties with a mean wind and I had the last table on the corner which caught a cross breeze. Thank God, I keep a pair of gloves in my winter jacket pocket.
When hubby and I came back from lunch, they had moved us all indoors. The crowd was light due to the weather, yet it was a positive experience, since I not only sold books, I donated to the library and I’m joining the Georgia Writers Assoc.

Before I went to bed last night, I took some Nyquil, but I still woke up with a scratchy throat, so I’m gonna take it easy and stay warm.

In the meantime, for all of you who haven’t read Ace of Hearts, (why not?) I’m posting a short excerpt. Come on, try it, you may like it!

Exclusive Excerpt from Ace of Hearts

When Shevaughn and Jared arrived, they found the apartment door open with a uniformed police officer stationed there and a host of other personnel scattered within. Shevaughn showed the uniformed officers her badge, and then stepping over things, slowly surveyed the apartment. At first sight, it looked like a case of vandalism, but then one officer led Shevaughn to the body and she faced a scene right out of some horror movie.

Good Lord!

Suddenly, the room seemed so hot she broke out in a sweat. She felt queasy and a small burp threatened to bring up her lunch. She swallowed hard and tried to keep all that sesame beef down, but a lump was stuck in her throat. It prevented her from completing this natural function and threatened to choke her. Help me through this, she silently prayed. Help me pull this off. It wouldn’t do to look weak in front of her fellow officers. She had to prove to them and herself that she could handle this. She hid a shiver and got closer to the body.

“Detective…”

One of the uniformed officers approached Shevaughn.

“We have the apartment manager and a lady who says she’s a friend of the victim in the apartment across the hall. The manager is the one who called it in.”

“Yes, I’d like to speak with them. Make sure the crime scene is secure and no reporters.”

“Shevaughn, if you want, I can talk to the apartment manager,” Jared volunteered.

“Fine, I’ll take the friend. Thanks, Jared.”

“No problem, you alright?”

“Yeah,” she lied.

Shevaughn couldn’t help feeling watched. It was as if they had her under a microscope. She had to snap out of it and get back to the business at hand. She had a job to do and do it she will. She walked to the manager’s apartment down the hall, thankful to be away from the horror she’d just witnessed.

“Hi,” she said, extending her hand to the crumbled woman on the sofa.

Shevaughn sat down on the couch beside her.

“I’m Detective Robinson. Can you tell me anything about what happened to your friend?”

“No, no, she’d said something about a big date last night. Like this could be the start…”

Joi broke off and burst into tears.

Shevaughn reached for her and Joi collapsed into her shoulder, sobbing.

“She always thought she was running’ things, you know. She thought she could handle anything, especially men and now look, look what’s happened to her. My God, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe someone would do something like that, especially not to her.”

“You have no idea who this man was?”

“No, she said she’d tell me everything today after work. She liked teasing me by keeping me in suspense.”

“Well, if you remember anything, anything at all, even if it doesn’t seem important to you, I want you to call me,” Shevaughn instructed and started to hand Joi a business card, but remembered they had her old extension on them. She hadn’t gotten her new ones yet. She crossed it out and wrote her new number on the back.

Joi took the card without looking at it.

Shevaughn left and returned to the murder scene.

Jared was looking around the apartment, taking notes on its general appearance and then began to concentrate on the victim and her lewd body position. He wrote down the victim’s general description. Looking closely, he saw the marks on her throat.

I’d appreciate it if you post a comment and let me know what you think. One will be picked for the daily giveaway.
